Black Ash Basketry Workshops with Alice Ogden

August 16 and 17, 2019   •   The Basket Maker’s Catalog   •   Scottsville, Kentucky

Choose from five workshops with master black ash weaver Alice Ogden of Salisbury, New Hampshire.  Spend time with a small group of fellow weavers working with fine black ash materials, hand harvested and prepared by Alice and her husband, Brad.

Choose from one-day or two-day basket workshops.  The Gardener’s Pick Baskets are each one-day and are for students of all levels.

Skilled weavers may choose from the two-day workshops as well—either the intricate Sterling, the newly designed Autumn Weave or the favorite Acorn.  You’ll appreciate Alice’s teaching style and her depth of knowledge.  In addition you’ll enjoy working with her ash splints and her trademark hand-carved oak handles and rims.  Alice’s baskets are especially prized by collectors for their traditional craftsmanship.  You may have seen the feature article 'Why We're Swooning Over These Baskets from Alice Ogden' in the October 2018 Martha Stewart magazine!  Congratulations, Alice!

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity in Scottsville, Kentucky to work with Alice, weave on a mold, and create some treasures.  We hope to see you in August!  Call today to register 1-800-447-7008.*

Acorn Basket (two-day workshop)  Enjoy creating this beautiful Acorn Basket--the perfect challenge for skilled basket makers.  It’s about 7” tall when 'topped'.  You’ll use 3/8” and 1/4” black ash splints and weave with finely prepared 1/16” black ash weavers.  Learn to make “spiders” and use a wooden form to help shape this basket—a one of a kind acorn for your basket collection.  The first day is spent weaving the bottom and the second day is spent weaving the stem into the top that fits the bottom of the acorn. We’re excited that Alice is offering the Acorn Basket again this year!

gardeners pick alice ogden

Gardener’s Pick (one-day workshops)  Working with black ash is truly a remarkable experience!  You’ll weave your basket on a wooden mold with 1/2” and 3/16” prepared black ash splint and attach beautiful hand carved white oak rims and handle.  Alice has prepared the splints along with the rims and handles for all the Gardener’s Pick Baskets so they nest, one inside the other.  For one-day workshops please let us know if you'll be attending August 16 or 17.
Note:  The wooden mold is for use during the class and is returned to Alice at the end of class.  Beginner to intermediate level.

If you have made baskets that are part of this set, bring those baskets with you to class in order to adjust the height and placement of rims for nesting.
