Beth Hester will be teaching The Language of Baskets at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts - Gatlinburg, Tennessee – August 2 - 8, 2020

Expand your fiber arts knowledge and explore the how-to of basket weaving.  Discover a variety of basketry techniques and concepts while weaving a series of 'panels' or 'samplers' using rattan materials.

Creating 'Panels' is a great way to learn and practice weaving techniques. Choose to concentrate on certain techniques, repeating the same panel using larger or smaller rattan materials, or learn a variety of techniques--you are welcome to pursue your ideas! You'll have many sizes of rattan to select from, along with a variety of seagrass, paper splint, etc. as described in Arrowmont's catalog.

The finished result will be panels that are appropriate for you to hang in your home or studio—they look absolutely beautiful grouped together collage-style. You'll be learning about the properties of the materials and encouraged to combine materials (seagrass, waxed linen, rattan, etc.), experimenting with possibilities.

In addition to your woven panels, you'll choose from a variety of printed basket patterns and select three of those patterns to take with you (three patterns included in the materials fee). We have enough time in the workshop to learn new techniques each day.

Each flat panel is approximately 12" x 12" and every student can expect to create at least 7 panels during the workshop. These panels are excellent resources for students' reference. My goal is for students to gain knowledge of a wide variety of weaving techniques to use in future projects, adding to their palette of skills.
