Nantucket Lightship Basket Three-day Workshop at the Kentucky Museum

Instructor:  Beth Hester, The Basket Maker's Catalog

Strong, beautiful and functional Nantucket baskets are indeed heirlooms to treasure.  Explore the fundamentals of Nantucket basket making techniques including carving staves, weaving on a mold, rim preparation, drilling, rim pinning and lashing.  Materials include: cherry base, cane staves, cane weavers, rattan rims, brass ears and handcarved slotted Oak handle.  Class fee covers use of molds (basket mold and rim mold) during class.  On the initial workshop evening you’ll prepare staves and begin weaving.  Day two you’ll continue weaving and prepare the rims; if needed, you’ll have homework to complete the weaving of your basket.  Day three consists of removing the basket from the mold, drilling and pinning the rims to the basket, attaching the handle, and lashing.  The Nantucket basket is challenging, but it’s an extremely rewarding experience resulting in a beautiful finely-woven basket to treasure!  Call today to register; class size is limited.
