Description: The 2019 3-Day Nantucket Basket Workshop is sponsored by Basketcases Unlimited in Clare, Illinois. Strong, beautiful and functional Nantucket baskets are indeed heirlooms to treasure.  Explore the fundamentals of Nantucket basket making techniques including carving staves, weaving, rim preparation, drilling, rim pinning and lashing.  Students will weave over a mold, on a lovely cherry base, using cane staves and weavers and rattan rims.  Handle treatment is determined by the style of basket chosen.  First year students should make a 6” Round Basket; those experienced in making this style of basket have several choices of Round or Oval baskets*.  Please contact Carolyn at Basketcases to register.  Fee includes use of molds during class.

If you’ve woven Nantuckets with us before* you know what a great experience awaits; if you’re a new student this year, welcome to the learning, fun, and fellowship. What a treat for me to drive to northern Illinois to teach this workshop, and be warmed by hearty meals and good company.

*If working on a nesting set, bring the baskets in your set, completed in prior years, to class each day.

Students should bring the following tools to class:
Pencil, scissors or shears, flexible measuring tape, a coffee mug to hold water,  Dremel Tool or small drill (optional), an old towel, chip carving knife or pocket knife, small basketry packing tool, apron (optional), sandpaper--fine & medium, a dozen or so spring-type clothespins, flush-cutting shears
