Using cedar bark as the base material, choose your `squishy' fiber - day lily, sweet grass, hosta, willow. You'll twine and combine using tension to define your shaping. The beauty of the naturals will determine the character of your unique woven expression. This basket takes time to evolve - each form will finish in its own way, in its own time. Suitable for all levels of weaver. |

This intense workshop is a wonderful introduction to white oak, a traditional Appalachian basketry material. Beginning with the tree and using hand tools, students will learn the complete white oak basketry process. The white oak tree will be split, carved and scraped into the materials needed for handles, rims, stakes and weavers. Students should have time to complete two small These basket types represent the majority of the white oak baskets found in Appalachia and they give the students an opportunity to learn many different basketry techniques. The Berry Basket is woven with “splits” and has a handle and rim that will be carved with a draw knife on a shaving horse. The Egg Basket is woven with “splits” and has hand carved ribs for the framework. Previous basket weaving experience helpful but not necessary. Remember – Working with white oak is mildly strenuous, moderate hand strength is required. |
