Reed Spline

Spline is a specially shaped piece of reed used to anchor the cane webbing into the groove of a chair.  The quantity of spline you need equals the circumference of your chair seat plus one additional foot.  Sold by the foot.

Chair Cane

Chair Cane, the outer bark of the rattan palm vine, is used for chairs that have a series of holes around the seat opening.  Consult the chart below to determine the correct size Chair Cane for your chair.  You need: Chair Cane, Binding Cane*, Caning Needle, and Caning Pegs.  See The Caner's Handbook for great 'how-to' chair seating information.  A 1000 ft. coil is enough material to seat 4 average-sized chairs.  The 250 ft. coil will seat 1 chair.  (Plus, the 250 ft. coil includes the Binding Cane.) *Binding Cane is normally 2 sizes larger than the cane with which the chair is woven. Order enough feet to cover the holes in your chair (usually 5-6 feet will be plenty).

Binding Cane

Binding Cane is cut from the tough, shiny bark of rattan.  It has many uses in basketry as well as chair seating.  Approx. 500 ft. / hank.

Shaker Tape

Weave a chair seat in the classic tradition of the Shakers using the Best Quality 100% Cotton Webbing available. See colors below. Easy to use and strong. Choose one color or combine colors for a contrasting "checkerboard" pattern (see photo at top of page). We recommend either "The Caner's Handbook" or the "Shaker Tape Chair Seating" booklet for instructions. Also, Shaker Tape (1" wide by 3 yds long) is used for handles in the New England Tote Basket.

Note: 34 yards of the 1" wide shaker tape is enough material to weave a 15" x 15" chair seat. You will need 42 yards of the 5/8" wide shaker tape to weave a 15" x 15" chair seat. Hickory Bark

Hickory Bark, a traditional chair seating material, is beautiful and long-lasting. It will serve your family well for generations. Simply soak for 15 minutes in hot water and weave into your ladderback-style chair as you would splint material. 35 yard bundle (5/8" to 3/4" wide) is enough to seat one average size chair (12" x 12").
